Book Review: Revolution 2020

Chetan Bhagat is the author of five blockbuster novels – Five Point Someone (2004),

One Night @ the Call Center (2005), The 3 mistakes of my Life (2008), 2 states (2009) and Revolution 2020 (2011). He has touched millions of hearts, especially youngsters across the country, with his lucid language and inspiring thoughts in all his books to bring about a change in our country.

It was yet another delight for all the Chetan Bhagat fans with the release of Revolution 2020.Though this novel is believed to be a mediocre as compared to his previous novels, he has put his heart and soul to motivate us to eradicate corruption. Author believes that youngsters should step up and need to create a revolution, which is very much needed in the present scenario.

Storyline mainly twirls around love, corruption and ambition as the tagline says. He drives the plot with a triangular love story, which he didn’t attempt before, among Gopal, Aarthi and Raghav who are childhood friends from school days, who struggle to find their success in Varanasi. Gopal gives in to the corrupt system for living his dreams while Raghav fights it and the dramatic climax reveals who wins it.

As you would agree with me that, one of the best parts of Chetan’s novels is the style he describes prologue and epilogue. In the beginning, the author lures the readers with an enjoyable description of childhood days of three friends. Awesome flavour of humor makes you remember your memorable days. The whole story is a narration of Gopal. The way he portrays his emotions a man undergoes in various stages of life is impeccable, which may make you feel nostalgic sometimes.

The author wonderfully picturises the current system of education, on how students struggle to get into top institutions. He criticizes how our political system is corrupt which will surely make us feel guilty and stir up thoughts in us that we should give something back to the society. The way he used girlese in Aarthi’s character for example ‘fine’ meaning ‘whatever’ or ‘go to hell’ simply adds up to fun, which makes the novel unputdownable. Nevertheless the character of Aarthi fails to amaze me with ‘confused-mind’ state caught up between friendship and love. He finishes the novel with a ‘not-expected’ climax, which throws light upon the fact that each and everyone should sacrifice for the country to develop.

Since 3 out of his 4 novels are converted to movies, I expect this one to be turned into a good movie too. Well, anyway fingers crossed. Thanks to the author for all his efforts. As Chetan tweeted ‘since this novel deals with corruption, reading in pirated copies defeats the point’, even I would like to say the same. Get a copy of yours and I wish you all happy reading. Are you ready for the revolution?

Bottom-line:  All in all a good read and the author has given his best shot to put an end to corruption.
